By Mark Staffin · Updated October 16, 2026 · Research-based review · How we review

You do not need an iron, or a viral pocket gadget, to get wrinkles out of clothes. Several methods work well, and most are free or nearly free. The common thread is the same physics behind every good garment tool: moisture (steam) plus a little heat relaxes fabric fibers so wrinkles fall out. That is why these beat a dry pocket press like riddiaPress (which we graded C- in our full riddiaPress review precisely because it lacks steam).

1. Hang it in a steamy bathroom (free, and very effective)

Hang the wrinkled garment on the back of the door or the shower rail, run a hot shower with the door closed, and let the room fill with steam for 10-15 minutes. The steam relaxes the fibers and many wrinkles simply drop out. This is the closest free equivalent to a steamer, and it works on cotton, which dry gadgets struggle with.

2. Use a wrinkle-release spray

Spray the garment lightly, tug and smooth the fabric by hand, then hang it to dry. These sprays relax fibers chemically and with moisture, and they are excellent for travel touch-ups. (See our wrinkle-release spray guide.)

3. Damp cloth or spray bottle plus hands

Lightly dampen the wrinkled area with a spray bottle or a wet-then-wrung cloth, then smooth and stretch the fabric flat with your hands and let it air-dry. Moisture does the work; your hands do the pressing.

4. The dryer trick (with a damp item or ice cube)

Toss the garment in the dryer with a damp washcloth (or a few ice cubes) on medium heat for 10-15 minutes. The moisture turns to steam, releasing wrinkles. Remove and hang promptly so new wrinkles do not set.

5. Hang it out (gravity and time)

Simply hanging clothes, especially slightly damp ones, lets gravity pull many light wrinkles out over time. Smoothing by hand as they dry helps. Great for a garment that is only mildly creased.

6. Flat-hand pressing on a firm surface

Lay the garment on a firm, flat surface, dampen lightly, and press and smooth firmly with your hands. Not perfect, but it tidies light wrinkles with no equipment.

7. Prevent them: pack smarter

The easiest wrinkles to remove are the ones you never create. Roll clothes rather than folding, use packing cubes, layer tissue paper in folds, and unpack and hang garments as soon as you arrive. Wrinkle-resistant fabrics also help.

Where a pocket “dry iron” fits (barely)

A palm-sized dry press like riddiaPress has no steam and a tiny plate, so it is limited to flattening a single small synthetic crease, and it performs poorly on cotton. Every method above, especially the steamy bathroom and a wrinkle spray, does more, usually for free. If you want a device that genuinely de-wrinkles on the go, a compact travel steamer is the honest pick (see riddiaPress vs a travel steamer).

Frequently Asked Question

What is the easiest way to de-wrinkle clothes without an iron?

Hang the garment in the bathroom while you run a hot shower for 10-15 minutes. The steam relaxes the fibers and many wrinkles fall out, with no device needed. It is free and works even on cotton, which dry gadgets struggle with.

Does hanging clothes in the bathroom really remove wrinkles?

Yes, for light to moderate wrinkles. The steam from a hot shower adds moisture that relaxes fabric fibers, the same mechanism a garment steamer uses, so many wrinkles drop out. Smoothing the fabric by hand as it warms helps further.

Do I need a pocket iron to touch up clothes while traveling?

No. A wrinkle-release spray, the steamy-bathroom trick, or a compact travel steamer all handle travel wrinkles better than a dry pocket press, which lacks steam and only spot-treats tiny synthetic creases. Save your money or spend it on a travel steamer instead.
